Group classes are where most Make Ready students start. They deliver professional instruction at a lower cost than private training, and you learn as much from other students' questions and corrections as from your own.

With Group Classes

Pistol 101 is a six-hour classroom class with no live fire; we provide the handguns you handle in class, so you can attend without owning a gun and leave knowing how to choose your first one. Pistol Essentials and Carbine Essentials are eight-hour beginner classes that add live fire on the range with your own pistol or AR-15 style carbine. From there, Next Level Pistol and Next Level Carbine refine the mechanics of shooting well, and Real World Scenarios puts those skills under pressure with force-on-force training.

Every class is taught by Chris Schaefer, a retired police officer with 24 years on the job who spent most of his career on patrol and as a field training officer teaching new officers to be safe and effective. Instructor certifications include the NRA, USCCA, and Tactical Hyve.

Group classes are capped at 18 students for all pistol and rifle instruction. That cap keeps the instructor-to-student ratio workable so you get real coaching on the line instead of watching from the back of the group. Before any live-fire exercise, students complete a safety briefing and demonstrate safe handling, and live fire is directly supervised throughout.

Your registration covers instruction and range fees for that session. You bring everything you would normally bring to train at the range: your firearm in good working condition, ammunition in your caliber, a holster and gun belt, magazines, eye and ear protection, sturdy shoes, weather-appropriate clothing, and food and water. We do not rent or loan firearms for live fire, so train with the equipment you actually use. Classes run rain, shine, or snow, and we contact registered students directly if conditions ever require rescheduling.

Live fire sessions are held at Fernan Rod and Gun Club, 11600 Fernan Lake Road in Coeur d'Alene. Each listing on the class schedule page shows the date, time, exact location, and price, and registration is handled online. Students regularly travel in from Post Falls, Hayden, Rathdrum, Sandpoint, and the Spokane area. If nothing on the calendar fits your timeline, call (208) 704-2355 — we add dates based on demand.

We also arrange dedicated sessions for women, couples, families, and other private groups on request, and businesses, churches, and clubs can book a group class built around their own objectives. Gift certificates are available and cover a spot in any class; Pistol 101 is the safest gift choice because the recipient does not need to own a gun.

Students must be at least 18 years old unless accompanied by a parent or another responsible adult. Some advanced and tactical courses carry a higher minimum age, stated in that class description. Cancellations more than 14 days before class receive a full refund; between 14 and 5 days out you receive a credit toward a future Make Ready course; within 5 days, or for no-shows, no refund or credit is issued.

Register through our class schedule page, or call (208) 704-2355 if you are not sure which class fits you.

Group Classes FAQs
Can I buy a firearms class as a gift?

Yes, we sell gift cards and gift certificates, and a gift certificate covers a spot in a class. It is a common gift for a spouse, an adult child setting up their own household, or a friend who just bought a first firearm. Pistol 101 is the safest gift choice because the recipient does not need to own a gun. Call (208) 704-2355 or email cs@mkr-training.com to arrange one.

How many students are in a group class?

Group classes are capped at 18 students for all pistol and rifle instruction. That cap keeps the instructor to student ratio workable so you get real coaching on the line instead of watching from the back of the group. Pistol 101, Pistol Essentials, and Carbine Essentials all run under that limit. Popular dates fill, so register early or call (208) 704-2355 to check availability.

Can I get a refund if I cancel my group class registration?

Yes, cancellations made more than 14 days before the class start date receive a full refund. Cancellations between 14 days and 5 days out receive a credit toward a future Make Ready course instead of a refund. Within 5 days of the class, and for no-shows, no refund or credit is issued. Group classes are capped at 18 students, so a late cancellation leaves a seat empty. Call (208) 704-2355 if something unexpected comes up.

Where are group classes held?

Group classes are held in the Coeur d'Alene area, with live fire sessions at Fernan Rod and Gun Club, 11600 Fernan Lake Road in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. Each listing on the class schedule page shows the exact location for that session. Students regularly travel in from Post Falls, Hayden, Rathdrum, Sandpoint, and the Spokane area.

Which group class should I take first?

If you are brand new to handguns, start with Pistol 101, a classroom safety and handling course with no live fire. If you already own the gun and want real fundamentals with live fire, start with Pistol Essentials, or Carbine Essentials for AR-15 style rifles. Once you shoot competently, move up to Next Level Pistol or Next Level Carbine, and then Real World Scenarios.

What is the minimum age for a group class?

Students must be at least 18 years old, unless they are accompanied by a parent or another responsible adult. Some advanced and tactical courses carry a higher minimum age, which is stated in that class description.

Do group classes run in bad weather?

Plan on training rain, shine, or snow, and dress for the conditions with layers and weather appropriate outerwear. We contact registered students directly if conditions ever require rescheduling a session.

Do you offer women only, couples, or family group classes?

Yes. We arrange dedicated sessions for women, couples, families, and other private groups on request, using the same curriculum in a setting where participants share similar experience and concerns. Call (208) 704-2355 to schedule one.

Can my business, church, or club book a private group class?

Yes. Group sessions can be built around your organization's objectives, whether that is baseline safety education for staff, home defense planning for a small community group, or a structured range day for a club. Call (208) 704-2355 with your group size, goals, and preferred dates.

How do I register for a group class?

Registration is handled online through our class schedule page, where each session lists its date, time, location, and price. If nothing on the calendar fits your timeline, call (208) 704-2355, because we add dates based on demand and can often open a session once there is enough interest.

Are group classes suitable for beginners?

Yes. Pistol 101 and the Essentials classes are built for new shooters and people with little formal training. Pistol 101 is classroom based with no live fire, and Pistol Essentials and Carbine Essentials are beginner courses that do include live fire. Higher level classes assume you can already handle your firearm safely on your own.

What do I need to bring to a group class?

Bring your firearm in good working condition, ammunition in your caliber, a holster and gun belt, magazines, eye and ear protection, sturdy shoes, weather appropriate clothing, and food and water. Train with the equipment you actually use, since the point is improving with your own gear rather than borrowed gear.

What is included in group class tuition?

Your registration covers the instruction and the range fees for that session. You are required to bring everything you would normally bring to train at the range, including your firearm, ammunition, holster, magazines, eye and ear protection, food, water, and any comfort items you need for the day.

How much do group firearms classes cost?

Group class pricing varies by course length and content. Next Level Pistol, a full day pistol performance course, is $250 per student. Current pricing for every scheduled class is posted on our class schedule page, and registration is handled online.
