Private training is the fastest way to fix a specific problem. Every repetition, every correction, and every drill is yours — no waiting for a rotation and no pacing to a group average. Whether it is an anticipatory flinch, a draw stroke, recoil management, red dot setup, or getting comfortable on a carbine for the first time, you set the agenda and we build the session around your goals and your current skill level.

With Private Classes

Each session starts with an assessment of where you actually are. We identify what is limiting your performance, rebuild the mechanics, and then give you enough repetitions for the change to hold after you leave the range. Diagnose. Correct. Perform. After the session you receive a written debrief with what we found, what we changed, and drills to practice on your own.

Your instructor is Chris Schaefer, a retired police officer with 24 years on the job, most of it on patrol and as a field training officer. That experience — observing a student, recognizing strengths and weaknesses, and adapting the training to fit — is the core of how a private session runs.

Private instruction is $150 per hour with a four-hour minimum, so a one-on-one session starts at $600. Each additional student is $75 per hour, so you can bring a spouse, friend, family member, or a few coworkers and still get individualized instruction. Range fees are set by the range we train at, are not included, and are confirmed when you book. Gift certificates are available and can be applied toward a private session.

Sessions are typically held at Fernan Rod and Gun Club, 11600 Fernan Lake Road in Coeur d'Alene. Other arrangements can be discussed depending on the topic and a safety assessment. Students travel to us from Post Falls, Hayden, Rathdrum, Sandpoint, Spokane, and Spokane Valley.

Bring the firearm you actually carry or keep at home, along with your ammunition, holster, magazines, and eye and ear protection. If you are still deciding what to buy, tell us when you book and we will build the session around handling, fit, and selection instead — guidance based on your needs and physical fit, not on selling you a product. We do not supply firearms or ammunition for range use.

Common topics include pistol and carbine fundamentals, drawing from concealment, everyday concealed carry skills, home defense planning, red dot setup and use, recoil management, malfunction clearing, and preparation for scenario-based training. Note that private instruction does not substitute for Idaho's Enhanced Concealed Weapons License course, which is a separate, state-mandated eight-hour class — ask us and we will point you to a qualifying date.

Students must be at least 18 years old unless accompanied by a parent or another responsible adult. Cancellations more than 14 days before your session receive a full refund; between 14 and 5 days out you receive a credit toward a future Make Ready course; inside 5 days, or for a no-show, no refund or credit is issued. A private session reserves an instructor and range time specifically for you, which is why the window matters.

To book, call (208) 704-2355 with the dates and times that work for you and what you want to accomplish. Weekend slots fill first, so give us a range of options if your schedule is flexible.

Private Classes FAQs
Can I give private training as a gift?

Yes, we sell gift cards and gift certificates, and they can be applied toward a private session. Private training makes a strong gift when the person already owns a firearm and wants focused, one on one help rather than a group setting. A gift certificate is also good for a spot in a scheduled class if they would rather start there. Call (208) 704-2355 or email cs@mkr-training.com.

Can I book a private lesson for just myself?

Yes, the minimum group size for a private booking is one person, so you can reserve a session entirely for yourself. One on one is the fastest way to fix a specific problem, whether that is an anticipatory flinch, a draw stroke, or getting comfortable on a carbine for the first time. Private instruction is $150 per hour with a four hour minimum, so a session starts at $600 plus range fees. Call (208) 704-2355 to schedule.

What is your cancellation policy for private training?

Cancel more than 14 days before your session and you receive a full refund. Cancel between 14 days and 5 days out and you receive a credit toward a future Make Ready course rather than a refund. Inside 5 days, or if you do not show, no refund or credit is issued. A private session reserves an instructor and range time specifically for you, which is why the window matters. Call (208) 704-2355 as early as possible to reschedule.

Does private training satisfy Idaho's enhanced concealed carry license requirement?

No. Idaho's enhanced concealed weapons license requires a separate, state mandated eight hour course with its own specific requirements, and private instruction does not substitute for it. Private training can sharpen the skills you rely on while carrying, but it is not the licensing course. Ask us and we will point you toward a qualifying enhanced course.

How do I book a private training session?

Call us at (208) 704-2355 with the dates and times that work for you and what you want to accomplish, and we will confirm availability. Weekend slots tend to fill first, so give us a range of options if your schedule is flexible.

What is the minimum age for private training?

Students must be at least 18 years old to train with us, unless they are accompanied by a parent or another responsible adult. If you are arranging a session for a younger family member, call (208) 704-2355 first so we can plan the session appropriately.

Where does private training take place?

Private sessions are typically held at Fernan Rod and Gun Club, 11600 Fernan Lake Road in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. Other arrangements can be discussed depending on the topic and a safety assessment. Students travel to us from Post Falls, Hayden, Rathdrum, Sandpoint, Spokane, and Spokane Valley.

Do I need my own gun for private training?

Bring your own firearm if you have one, because training with the gun you actually carry or keep at home is the entire point of private instruction. If you are still deciding what to buy, tell us when you book and we will build the session around handling, fit, and selection instead. We do not supply firearms for students to shoot on the range, and you also supply your own ammunition, holster, and eye and ear protection.

Is private training better than a group class?

Private training is faster. Every repetition, every correction, and every drill is yours, with no waiting for a rotation and no pacing to a group average. Group classes cost less and add the benefit of learning from other students' questions. Many shooters take a group class first, then use private time to fix specific problems.

What can we work on in a private lesson?

Anything you want, on either platform. Common requests include pistol or carbine fundamentals, drawing from concealment, everyday concealed carry skills, home defense planning, red dot setup and use, recoil management, malfunction clearing, and preparation for scenario based training. You set the agenda and we build the session around your goals and your current skill level.

Can more than one person attend a private session?

Yes. Private sessions can be booked for an individual or a small group such as a couple, a family, or a few coworkers, and the instruction is still built around the people in front of us rather than a fixed curriculum. Pricing is $150 per hour for the first student plus $75 per hour for each additional student, with a four hour minimum, and range fees are separate. Call (208) 704-2355 to discuss group size before you book.

What is the minimum length of a private training session?

Four hours is the minimum, at $150 per hour, so a one-on-one session starts at $600 plus range fees. That length exists because real diagnosis and correction takes time. We assess your current baseline, identify what is actually limiting your performance, rebuild the mechanics, and then give you enough repetitions for the change to hold after you leave the range.

How much does private firearms training cost?

Private instruction is $150 per hour with a four-hour minimum, so a one-on-one session starts at $600. Each additional student is $75 per hour, so you can bring a spouse, friend, or family member and still get individualized instruction. Range fees are not included and are set by the range we train at, so they are confirmed when you book. You supply your own firearm, ammunition, holster, eye and ear protection, and personal items such as food and water. Call (208) 704-2355 for a quote on your session.
